When I asked James if he wanted to go to the zoo Thursday night and learn about the wolves and see them eat a dead deer he did not hesitate a bit. His eyes lit up and he pounced at the idea. Especially when he learned that not only would Daddy and Erik be joining us but his good friend Emma too.
We learned many things about wolves at the zoo Thurs night.
-Wolves do not eat everyday, they eat about once a week and at that sitting can/will devour approximately 20 lbs of meat (Erik weighs 19.5 lbs)
-They HAVE to eat meat even though they can eat grasses, apples etc their bodies do not digest them well enough for them to survive on vegetation
-When they eat a deer, elk, buffalo, moose etc they will eat everything but the contents of the stomach. They also eat fish and small game.
- The wolves at the zoo are fed every 4 days unless they catch some of the ducks who errantly decide to land in their pond.
-The wolves at the zoo were raised from week old pups and are all siblings they spent 24 hours with zoo staff to get them used to people.
-Their legs are closer together than say a dogs legs which makes them faster when chasing prey.
- Their paws are slightly webbed making it easier for them to walk on snow.
These two are my favorites
James thought they were pretty cool too. They were all wound up and trotting all over their enclosure because they are not yet used to people being at the zoo during the evening and weekdays yet again after winter. (The zoo is open Sat and Sun through the winter)
We heard about and then joined Emma and her parents Katelyn and Tony for this event at the zoo. (Click on their names for a peek at their blog and some great pictures from this night my camera battery died about halfway through and Erik decided he MUST be fed as well.)
The whole pack
We were king of hoping for a little gore and James was not at all concerned about this. He LOVES to watch Animal planet and learn all he can about animals. He understands a little about the food chain.
